AND THE WINNER IS.........

The U.S. Green Building Council – Greater Houston Area Chapter hosted its Annual Awards Celebration and Casino Night on Thursday, December 11 at Minute Maid Park. This event included the announcement of the 2008 Environmental Awards recipients for Outstanding Environmental Leader, Outstanding Environmental Project and Outstanding Environmental Team. USGBC-Houston also announced the winner of the Emerging Green Builders Scholarship and the Outstanding Environmental Student Project Competition.



Outstanding Environmental Leader: Sheila Blake

Blake is the Building Code Administrator for the City of Houston. She is a Certified Building Official and a member of the International Code Council with multiple code certifications. Blake is a member of USGBC-Houston Chapter and sits on the USGBC National Technical Advisory Council for Codes. She also serves on the Greater Houston Partnership’s Green Building Committee and on the steering committee of the Houston Land and Water Sustainability Forum. Other involvements include participation with the Mayor’s Environmental Liaisons committee. Blake has been responsible for setting up a LEED incentive for plan review and LEED training sessions. She established the Code Enforcement Green Building Resource Center and coordinates with Mayor Bill White’s Green Building Advisory Committee.

Houston Emerging Green Builders Scholarship winner: Scott Smith

Smith has a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston as well as a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. He is the president and founder of the University of Houston Green Building Initiative and has incorporated LEED (USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system) and sustainable building practices into several of his studio projects.




Outstanding Environmental Student Project winnerJames Petty

Petty, who recently earned a Bachelor of Architecture from U of H, won first place in the 2008 Houston Natural Talent Design Competition. His project also earned him a free trip to USGBC Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Boston in November.
